June 7 - On this day in geek history in 1975 Sony introduced the first Betamax Video Recorder. The Betamax was a video tape format that was revolutionary when it was released. The format was the industry standard until JVC released the VHS a year later.

The VHS surpass the Betamax because it offered longer record times, making it possible to record a full three hour movie on a single tape. Though the format would be irrelevant before the end of the 70s, the format still has a niche market today. Sony continued to manufacture Betamax recorder until 2002.
